This workshop for beginners will help you become proficient at photo editing which is often a necessary aspect of every personal and business photography project. It will guide you through one of the most valuable software tools in your creative toolbox, Adobe Photoshop.

We will cover a range of content split over 2-hour sessions for 3 weeks so you can practice editing and retouching your images between classes. Learn how to develop your digital files and film negatives as well as crop, retouch and transform your photographs. By working creatively with layers, masks and filters, you will process images ready for printing, sharing and portfolios.

Photoshop is held on a Monday evening for 3 weeks.

Week 1

  • Photoshop interface essentials: Opening and closing documents, personalising your Workspace e.g. Window menu, Nesting + the History panel
  • Documents and navigation
  • Camera raw essentials
  • File types: RAW, TIFF, PSD, JPG
  • Workflow
  • Cropping and straightening images
  • Working with layers
  • Transforming, distorting, and warping images

 

Week 2

  • Working with Smart Objects for photo manipulations
  • Working with Layer Masks
  • Making selections
  • Essential blend modes
  • Adjustment layer essentials
  • Creative adjustment layer techniques
  • Actions for creating automated techniques: e.g Dodge and Burn, Cross Process + downloading and installing Actions

 

Week 3

  • Adjustment layer essentials
  • Basic shape layers – Vignettes, Shape Pops
  • Retouching skills: Portraits, Fashion, Clone + Heal tool, Content Aware, Liquify, Brush Tool
  • Combining multiple images: Levitation activity (Creative exercise)
  • Filters

ABOUT THE LECTURER

Natalie Blom is a photomedia artist from Perth, Western Australia. She completed an Advanced Diploma of Photography at the Central Institute of Technology in Perth in 2010. Natalie runs her own business as a freelance photographer and has exhibited her work locally, nationally and internationally. The Shattered Horizon, Natalie’s first solo exhibition was selected for inclusion in Head On Photographic Festival 2013 in Sydney and consisted entirely of analogue film photography. Natalie also facilitates workshops for secondary school students and adults.

Equipment & Prerequisites

  • Laptop or tablet with Photoshop installed (Preferably any version above CS3)
  • A selection of images you would like to work on
  • Any hard drives or backup devices

Cancellation

We reserve the right to alter or cancel any workshop at any time. Sometimes for reasons including, but not limited to, too few participants, adverse weather, instructor illness, logistical problems or any other circumstances, which may make operation of the workshop inadvisable. If any workshop has to be cancelled by us, then all fees are refunded in full or you may choose another date or workshop.
